NBA Trade Dispute: Brown Rejects Demand Rumors
A Sixers forward refutes claims he forced a move to Philadelphia, while his former Celtics teammate insists the friction is fading.

Tension between Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum and Philadelphia 76ers forward Jaylen Brown has intensified this week, with both players now publicly addressing the noise surrounding their split. The friction emerged after the Celtics sent Brown to the Sixers during the recent offseason. Boston received Paul George, two first-round picks (2028 and 2031) and two second-round selections (2028 and 2030) in the deal.
The dispute centers on conflicting accounts of why Brown left. Brian Scalabrine, an analyst for NBC Sports Boston, reported on Monday that Brown demanded a trade and held a list of requirements. Scalabrine suggested Brown was rooting for a move to the Milwaukee Bucks. A representative for Brown rejected this narrative, calling the claim a "10000% lie" in a statement to ESPN. The representative stated that Brown never requested a move to Milwaukee and that a deal involving Giannis Antetokounmpo had already collapsed before Boston informed Brown he would be traded.
Scalabrine modified his remarks after the Celtics faced the Chicago Bulls on Monday night. He conceded that Brown did not technically demand a trade, though he maintained that a list of demands existed. Scalabrine speculated that one item might have been a $140 million extension, noting he did not know the specific details and had not expected the topic to become a major story. Brown's representative countered that the only request made during the transition period was to have a say in his destination.
The public disagreement began when Tatum said in a YouTube video that he was as caught off guard by the trade as everyone else. Brown responded on Instagram by posting a blue hat emoji, which represents the slang term for lying. The following day, Tatum said there was no beef and that the drama was likely driven by a desire for views. He stated he would welcome a conversation with Brown.
Brown offered a different perspective two days later. He agreed there was no beef but joked that there might be lamb chops and gravy. He referred to Tatum having a strong PR team and declined to explain the emoji. Brown said both players have a lot ahead of them and must focus on what is best for their respective teams.
The two players spent nine seasons together in Boston. Brown was selected third overall in the 2016 draft, while Tatum was the third pick in 2017. Together, they led the Celtics to five Eastern Conference finals, two NBA Finals, and a 2024 championship over the Dallas Mavericks.
The Sixers and Celtics will continue to manage their rosters through the upcoming season. Brown is now part of the Philadelphia squad, while Tatum remains the centerpiece of the Boston roster.
