U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is recovering from a stroke that he suffered while watching his son play hockey. The incident occurred on October 31, 2026, and led to his immediate transfer to a major medical center for ongoing care.

Murphy first noticed numbness in his arm during the game. He was taken to a local hospital, where medical staff diagnosed him with a stroke. Doctors subsequently moved him to Johns Hopkins for additional monitoring and specialized treatment.

His chief of staff reported on November 1 that Murphy remains hospitalized but is responding well to the care regimen. The senator's office stated that he is currently awake and alert. Medical staff have expressed optimism regarding his recovery trajectory, citing his positive response to initial interventions.

The stroke interrupts a long political career that began in the local government of Connecticut. Murphy was born in White Plains, New York, in 1973, but he grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Wethersfield High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He also completed studies at Oxford University.

Murphy entered public service in 1997 when he won a seat on the Southington Planning and Zoning Commission. At age 25, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1998 to represent the 81st District. He served in the state senate from 2003 to 2006, representing the 16th District.

He moved to Washington in 2006 after defeating Republican Rep. Nancy Johnson for the 5th Congressional District. Murphy served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives starting in 2007. In 2012, he defeated Linda McMahon to win the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Joe Lieberman. He has served as a senator since January 3, 2013, alongside Richard Blumenthal.

During his time in the Senate, Murphy won re-election in 2018 and 2024. He played a leading role in negotiations for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022 following the shooting in Uvalde, Texas. He also staged a roughly 15-hour filibuster in 2016 to push for gun legislation after the Pulse nightclub shooting. On January 3, 2025, he became a deputy secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
