Carrick 'Massively Wrong' to Leave Fernandes Benched in 3-0 Loss
Danny Murphy criticizes Manchester United manager for not substituting his captain during a heavy defeat to Bournemouth.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was told he was 'massively wrong' to leave Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the entire duration of a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Former midfielder Danny Murphy argued the decision was 'silly' given the scoreline and the player's status as the team's best asset. Carrick dropped Fernandes from the starting lineup after the captain criticized the coaching staff's tactics following a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.
It is rare for the midfielder to sit out a match entirely. The benching appeared to be a message to the squad, but Murphy believed the strategy backfired. He noted that United were down 2-0 at halftime, which was the ideal moment to insert Fernandes. Murphy suggested Carrick should have told the captain to show he was wrong by performing.
Murphy stated, 'I'm surprised they didn't get it all sorted before the weekend's game against Bournemouth because he's your best player.' He added that Carrick could have disciplined Fernandes privately or left him out of the squad altogether, but keeping him on the bench without a substitute was a mistake. 'You're punishing him in front of the world and you're 2-0 down against Bournemouth,' Murphy said.
The loss marked Manchester United's eighth consecutive game without a win. Carrick remains in charge for the upcoming match against Chelsea. He and Fernandes held positive talks on Tuesday to move past the incident, but Murphy believes the clear-the-air session does not fix the underlying issues.
The former Liverpool and Tottenham player pointed to the team's running statistics as a major concern. He said the numbers are 'really concerning' and suggest the squad is either not physically prepared or switching off. 'They're always massively worrying when you're at the lower end of the running stats and losing games,' Murphy said.
Chelsea will host Manchester United at 12.30pm on Saturday. The contest is scheduled to be a key test for Carrick as he attempts to stabilize the team's form and address the physical deficit identified in recent performances.
