Mbilli Takes On Canelo In Title Defense
The undefeated champion faces the boxing world's heavy favorite in a bout scheduled for Saturday.

Boxing fans will watch Christian Mbilli attempt to keep his WBC super middleweight title on Saturday. He faces Saul Canelo Alvarez in a matchup that has drawn close betting lines despite the odds favoring the challenger.
Mbilli secured the full championship following Terence Crawford's retirement. Crawford had defeated Alvarez in September 2025, and Mbilli was elevated from interim champion to the top spot. He had won the interim belt in June 2025 by stopping Maciej Sulecki in the first round. His most recent fight before this promotion ended in a split draw against Lester Martinez.
The champion fights as a high-pressure bruiser who relies on physical strength. He has won 24 of his 29 professional fights by knockout. His strategy often involves driving opponents to the ropes and landing heavy right hands to the head while working the body with left hooks. He demonstrated this approach when he finished Mark Heffron in just 40 seconds with a body shot.
His aggressive style has shown signs of strain in recent contests. Over his last five fights, Mbilli threw an average of 78 punches per round, with 58 of those being power shots. That number is double the super middleweight average. The volume and his muscular build can wear him down in long fights, as seen in his 10-round draw with Martinez. His pursuit of big shots also leaves him open to counterpunches, a vulnerability Sergiy Derevyanchenko exploited in a previous bout despite fighting with one arm.
Alvarez enters the fight as a favorite, though he has gone eight fights without a stoppage. The veteran still possesses enough power to hurt opponents, but his record suggests he may not finish as many fights as before. Mbilli is listed as a +250 underdog, a tighter line than the matchup would have received in recent years.
Mbilli's path to victory involves using his size and aggression to control the pace. He can try to turn the contest into a physical brawl against an opponent who does not throw high volumes of punches. Former champion Terence Crawford told DAZN that Mbilli's style is tailor-made for Canelo. Crawford added that he does not see Mbilli winning a traditional boxing match but believes his best chance lies in roughing Canelo up and making it a dogfight.
The fight is set to take place this Saturday night. Mbilli will look to use his physical advantages to overcome the technical skill of the Hall of Famer. The outcome will determine the next holder of the WBC super middleweight belt.
