A 27-year-old Venezuelan man died after an off-duty FBI agent shot him in Chicago on Monday night. The agent was driving alone when he saw Oscar D. Corrales firing a gun toward a homeless encampment. The agent stopped his vehicle, exited, and fired shots that killed Corrales.
Federal sources indicated Corrales was not the target of an immigration sweep. The encounter occurred in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue. Chicago Police confirmed officers responded to the scene involving federal agents. The department's Investigative Response Team documented the incident. Officials referred further questions to the FBI's Chicago field office.
Corrales had a prior record with federal authorities. Sources said he was apprehended at the southern border in October 2023. He was released into the United States during the Biden administration. He also faced a previous arrest in California. Authorities released him from custody despite an ICE detainer. Details regarding the specific charges and the releasing jurisdiction in California were not immediately available.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as a 27-year-old male under case number 5735. The FBI agent was working off duty at the time of the shooting. Law enforcement emphasized the incident was unrelated to standard immigration enforcement operations. The agency has reached out to the FBI for further details on the agent's involvement.
