Ocala deli ends 12-year run
Rising costs forced the closure of a popular downtown shop, which now points customers to a nearby sister diner for its remaining menu items.

Small food retailers in Ocala face mounting pressure from inflation and shifting consumer habits, a trend that recently led to the permanent shutdown of a long-standing local institution.
Ocala Fresh Produce & Deli ceased operations on Monday, Nov. 2, after 12 years in business. The shop, located at 1010 SW 1st Avenue, announced its closure on Sunday, Nov. 1, following an initial notice to customers on Friday, Oct. 30. The owner attributed the decision to rising operating costs, increasing product prices, and a changing economic climate. In a statement shared on social media, the owner wrote, "After 12 wonderful years, it is with a heavy heart that I announce the closing of Ocala Fresh Produce." The message noted that these financial pressures made continued operations increasingly difficult. The owner expressed gratitude to the customers who supported the business over its decade-long run.
The deli sat across the street from the Ocala Diner, which operated as a sister establishment. While the produce and deli counter are no longer open, the full lineup of soups and sandwiches remains available at the Ocala Downtown Diner. That location is at 816 S. Magnolia Avenue. Customers seeking the specific items previously sold at the closed deli can still purchase them at this nearby venue.
The space at 1010 SW 1st Avenue is not expected to remain vacant for long. The owner indicated that a new business will soon take over the location. The final part of the announcement stated, "While this chapter is closing for me, the location will have a new chapter of its own." The owner urged the community to watch for updates on the new tenant. This transition marks the end of a specific era for the downtown block, while the culinary offerings continue in an adjacent building.
