Baltimore City Council advanced the Mental Health Resources Awareness Act on Wednesday. The bill aims to address the local mental health crisis by increasing public access to suicide prevention tools.
The legislation mandates that specific high-traffic locations display educational materials regarding the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Covered businesses include liquor stores, tobacco shops, and casinos. Public buildings are also required to post the information.
Community groups and behavioral health providers backed the initiative. CarePoint Response, a local provider, supported the measure to normalize seeking psychological help. The strategy focuses on placing emergency resources in places where residents already spend time.
City officials stated that immediate access to the 988 number serves as a key preventive tool. They noted that the number is vital for populations experiencing severe stress or vulnerability.
The bill targets businesses that sell alcohol and tobacco, as well as gaming venues. It also includes municipal offices. The goal is to make the 988 line visible to a wide audience in the city.
Supporters argue that visibility in these locations helps mitigate self-harm rates in the region. The council moved the project forward as a direct response to current health indicators.
