Maryland police will monitor 1,200 registered sex offender homes on Halloween night, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. The state’s Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services manages the registry, which identifies individuals subject to no-contact restrictions. Law enforcement agencies stated that the patrols are designed to verify that these individuals remain at home and adhere to their legal conditions.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services confirmed that the operation involves coordination between local police and state parole and probation officers. The goal is to maintain public safety while ensuring the law is enforced consistently across jurisdictions. Residents can access specific data about registrants in their neighborhoods by visiting the Maryland Sex Offender Registry or the U.S. Department of Justice website.

Officials provided specific instructions for the public to report potential violations. Anyone who suspects a registered sex offender with a no-contact order is trick-or-treating should call the Sex Offender Registry team at 410-887-7740. The department emphasized that this number is dedicated to receiving reports during the holiday period.

In addition to monitoring offenders, Maryland authorities published a list of safety guidelines for residents preparing for the holiday. The recommendations focus on visibility, fire prevention, and emergency planning for children. The advice covers three main areas: costume selection, home decoration, and trick-or-treating behavior.

For costumes, officials recommend choosing bright or reflective materials that are short enough to prevent tripping. Masks should not obstruct vision, and parents are advised to add reflective tape or lights to costumes and candy bags. Costumes, wigs, and accessories should be labeled flame-resistant, or homemade versions should use materials that do not ignite easily when exposed to heat.

Regarding home decoration, authorities suggest using lanterns or light bars instead of open flames or incandescent bulbs. Homeowners should avoid overloading electrical outlets and replace any frayed or damaged extension cords. Exits must remain clear of decorations to ensure safe escape routes in case of an emergency.

For trick-or-treating, the department advises adults to supervise children closely while they are out. Pet owners should consider using leashes with built-in reflective material. Children attending parties at unfamiliar houses should identify exit locations and plan a route to leave in an emergency. The next step for the public is to review these guidelines before the evening begins.
