Powerball Economics: The $716 Million Gap Between Headline and Bank Account
Federal and state levies reduce the Wednesday jackpot's cash value to between $164.4 million and $193.6 million, depending on where the ticket was bought.

The estimated $716 million Powerball jackpot scheduled for the Wednesday night drawing masks a much smaller reality for the eventual winner. Once the Internal Revenue Service and state agencies collect their share, the cash deposited into the winner's account will range from $164,396,043 to $193,580,043. This variance depends entirely on whether the player selects the lump-sum option and in which state the winning ticket was purchased.
The headline figure of $716 million represents the annuity option, which distributes the prize over 30 years in annual payments averaging $23,866,667. Most players, however, opt for the immediate cash payout. For this specific drawing, that lump sum is valued at $307,200,000. This cash value serves as the baseline for all subsequent tax calculations.
Federal taxation on lottery winnings is treated as ordinary income, placing the winner in the highest tax bracket. The IRS mandates a 24% withholding on prizes exceeding $5,000, which immediately deducts $73,728,000 from the $307.2 million cash prize. Because the top federal tax rate for 2026 is 37%, the winner owes an additional 13% at tax filing time. This final federal payment amounts to $39,891,957, leaving a federal post-tax subtotal of $193,580,043.
State income taxes create the final divergence in take-home amounts. Nine states impose no personal income tax, and California explicitly exempts lottery winnings from state levies. A winner in Florida, Texas, or California retains the full $193,580,043. Conversely, New York imposes the highest state tax on lottery prizes at 10.9%. A winner in Maryland, which charges 9.5%, sees the final payout drop to $164,396,043.
The numbers for the $716 million jackpot will be drawn at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday. If a single ticket matches, the winner receives between $164.3 million and $193.5 million in cash. If no ticket matches, the jackpot amount will increase for the following Saturday's drawing.
