The Los Angeles Dodgers face stiff competition in their effort to re-sign right-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal, who is projected to command a contract exceeding $300 million. With the MLB lockout scheduled to begin in less than a month, the window for teams to secure the 2024 top free agent is closing rapidly.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on Monday that the Chicago Cubs have a strong interest in adding Skubal to their rotation. However, Passan noted that the Cubs are uncertain if they will match the price tag, which could reach the $400 million range. The San Diego Padres also entered the conversation as a candidate for the two-time Cy Young winner.
San Diego’s interest stems from recent roster changes that left a gap in their starting lineup. Michael King opted out of his three-year deal signed last offseason, and the team subsequently released Nick Pivetta from his contract after he spent much of the season on the injured list. Passan described the Padres as needing a rotation anchor, stating that the best pitcher in baseball would more than suffice.
Despite the interest from Chicago and San Diego, Passan believes the bidding war will primarily feature the Dodgers and the New York Mets. Baseball colleague Alden Gonzalez added that Skubal would love to return to Los Angeles, citing the organization’s established culture and resources. Gonzalez also highlighted Skubal’s relationship with teammate Blake Snell as a factor in his preference.
Gonzalez observed that Skubal’s final decision will come down to price. He noted that the Dodgers must determine if they are willing to match the financial offer from the Mets, which are led by owner Steve Cohen, while navigating the potential introduction of a salary cap.
