The Milwaukee Brewers secured their first World Series title in franchise history on Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The win concludes a 58-season journey for a club that began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 before relocating to Milwaukee the following year. Fans at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, celebrated immediately after the final out.
The path to this moment required overcoming historical and recent obstacles. The organization’s previous World Series appearance in 1982 ended in defeat against the St. Louis Cardinals after blowing a lead. Manager Pat Murphy, who survived a heart attack in 2020, led the team through a regular season that produced 103 wins. The postseason run included an 11-2 record and seven comeback victories, culminating in a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.
Game 5 followed a difficult Game 4, where the Brewers lost a 4-3 extra-inning decision despite being three outs away from a sweep in the 12th inning. Rookie Cooper Pratt tied the score with a solo home run in that final frame but remained in the lineup for the clincher. He finished with two hits and two runs batted in, extending his hit streak to six games to set a Series rookie record. Jackson Chourio also set a five-game Series record with 11 total hits.
Jacob Misiorowski started the game and threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits before leaving due to a right calf cramp. The 24-year-old pitcher topped out at 103 mph on two fastballs and threw 58 strikes in 86 total pitches. He finished with two strikeouts, matching his career low. The bullpen followed with JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe, and closer Trevor Megill, who secured the final outs.
William Contreras, named the World Series Most Valuable Player, hit a run-producing double in the sixth inning. The Brewers scored their remaining runs in that frame, with Pratt hitting a sacrifice fly. The team relied heavily on contact hitting, recording a major league-low 32.1% of runs via home runs. The two teams combined for just four home runs during the entire series.
Principal owner Mark Attanasio addressed the crowd from the postgame stage, noting that Milwaukee had waited 44 years for this championship. Christian Yelich, the team captain, expressed joy at bringing the title home to the city. Murphy described the 2026 roster as a group that prioritized collective success over individual statistics. He credited the team’s resilience for overcoming the initial 3-1 series deficit.
The Rays, an expansion team from 1998, fell to 0-3 in World Series history. They are now the fifth club to lose in Game 5 after dropping the first three contests. Manager Kevin Cash praised his players for carrying themselves well despite the loss. The team now looks toward the offseason as owners push for a salary cap that could lead to a lockout starting December 2.
The Brewers led the majors in regular season wins and finished the postseason with a strong record. Their victory marks the first championship for the organization since the move from Seattle. The Rays’ defeat adds to the list of teams that have struggled in early World Series appearances, joining the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers in the ranks of clubs with poor early series records.
