Washington closed its five-game homestand with four wins after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Wednesday night. Alex Tuch scored two goals in the victory, bringing his total to nine in his first 11 games with the Capitals. This performance makes him the second player in team history to reach that mark so quickly, following Dino Ciccarelli who scored 12 times in his first 11 appearances during the 1988-89 season.
Tuch joined the team via a trade from Buffalo and signed an eight-year, $84-million contract extension in June. He found the back of the net just 1:50 into the game when he one-timed a rebound from the slot. He added another goal late in the third period with the Flyers playing 5-on-6. Jordan Kyrou also scored twice, while Aliaksei Protas recorded his first goal of the season.
Dylan Strome provided three assists for Washington. Jack St. Ivany and Pierre-Luc Dubois each contributed two assists. Goalie Logan Thompson, returning from a lower-body injury that caused him to miss Saturday's game against Buffalo, stopped 23 shots. Joseph Woll made 25 saves for Philadelphia, but it was not enough to stop the loss.
The Flyers dropped their third consecutive game after an overtime loss to Columbus on Tuesday. Matvei Michkov scored his ninth goal of the season for Philadelphia. Sean Couturier scored in the early second period to temporarily tie the game. The team now looks to reset its schedule with a home game against Utah on Sunday.
The Capitals will leave the building and travel to Nashville for a Thursday night contest.
