The Black Sea has become the deadliest route for sailors in 2026, with a higher death toll than the Gulf.
Data from the maritime security firm Ambrey and the International Maritime Organisation indicates that 570 ships were targeted in the region this year. At least 40 seafarers died as a result. In contrast, 24 deaths have been confirmed in the Strait of Hormuz. Shipowners and maritime groups reported these figures to the Financial Times. Some estimates suggest the frequency of attacks in the Black Sea is more than six times higher than in the Gulf. The third quarter of the year saw an average of more than four attacks per day. Vessels were either caught in crossfire during port bombardments or deliberately targeted.
Oleh Hryhoriuk, chair of the Marine Transport Workers' Trade Union of Ukraine, described the conditions as severe. He stated that the Black Sea and calling at Ukrainian ports is near suicidal. Crews on oil tankers, cargo ships, and grain carriers operate close to EU and NATO territory while facing drone threats.
Economic factors are influencing fleet movements. Record-high freight rates have led some companies to accept the risks of Middle East oil transport. However, shipping groups report that most operators avoid the Black Sea because profit margins are lower and risks are higher. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said Russia is turning the Black Sea into a danger zone for civilian vessels.
The next phase of maritime operations will depend on how operators balance cost against safety. Freight rates and attack frequency are key variables in this calculation. The International Maritime Organisation and Ambrey will continue to track ship targeting events. Ukrainian port authorities monitor daily attack logs. Shipping companies review insurance premiums and route options weekly. The goal is to maintain trade while managing the elevated threat level.
