Public electric vehicle charging in Arlington gets more expensive in six days.
The Arlington County Board approved a 72 percent increase in charging rates at dozens of public stations. The new rate takes effect Nov. 1 and raises the base fee at slow chargers from 17.46 cents per kilowatt-hour to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour. County officials estimate a full charging session will cost about $5 more.
Arlington leaders said installing charging stations costs more now and electricity itself costs more. They attributed rising power bills to data center demand and grid upgrades. The county has 51 public EV charging locations, and the board said demand for chargers is growing.
EV owner Elijah Colson called the change a major jump but said he still prefers electricity over gasoline. Colson said a fill-up normally runs about nine or 10 dollars, compared with 40 dollars for gas. Another EV owner, Shihyag, questioned the scale of the increase and pointed to data centers as a possible driver of power costs.
Arlington's board approved the rate change for public slow chargers ahead of the Nov. 1 start date.
