New York City residents can purchase seized items from the NYPD, including jewelry, rare coins, designer clothing, and electronics, through online auctions. The department’s Property Management Section lists unclaimed items for public sale via the external auction house PropertyRoom. Participation is open to anyone and does not require law enforcement affiliation, though winners must pay the winning bid plus any applicable charges.
The Property Management Section collaborates with PropertyRoom, a company that handles properties from police agencies across the United States. While the inventory fluctuates based on available evidence and active auctions, sales occasionally include vehicles. Bidders must create an account on PropertyRoom.com using a valid email, password, and legal name. Users must be at least 18 years old and register a valid payment method to place bids.
Access to the full range of categories is limited to bidders in the United States. Residents of Mexico and Canada may only bid on vehicles and heavy industrial equipment. Before bidding, buyers can review photographs, descriptions, and specific conditions for each item. The platform notes that most items are considered used unless stated otherwise, and buyers should not assume that electronics function or include accessories not explicitly mentioned in the listing.
The final cost often exceeds the winning bid. Charges may include taxes, shipping, handling, and a buyer’s commission. PropertyRoom states that this commission does not apply to most items but can range from 10% to 15% when present. The fee is disclosed before a bid is confirmed. For example, an $800 winning bid with a 15% commission results in a subtotal of $920 before other fees. This commission is non-refundable.
Payment methods depend on the total purchase price. Transactions of $4,999.99 or less are automatically charged to the registered payment method. Purchases of $5,000 or more require a bank transfer. Once a bid meets the auction conditions and is accepted, the winner is obligated to complete the purchase. Bids generally cannot be withdrawn except in exceptional circumstances defined by the platform.
PropertyRoom advises buyers to check for existing warranties or manufacturer support, as some items may have expired coverage or lack support. The platform does not refund costs for repairs or modifications made by the buyer after the sale. The NYPD continues to list new items as they enter the custody system, allowing the public to review current offerings on the website.
