Murder suspect asks for cheesesteak to accept life sentence
A Florida man accused of killing a woman in 2021 proposed a guilty plea in exchange for a specific sandwich during Monday's jury selection.

Robert Kessler, 74, suggested on Monday that he would accept a life sentence for murder if the court provided him with a Philadelphia-style cheesesteak. The proposition came up during jury selection in Hillsborough County, Florida, where Kessler faces charges related to the 2021 death of Stephanie Crone-Overholt. Kessler specified that the sandwich must include onions, mayonnaise, and 20 ounces of peppers. He also requested an order of fries and a Pepsi.
The judge interrupted the exchange, noting that she could not offer food as part of a plea deal. She told the court that while Kessler could have lunch that day, the menu was not guaranteed. After the judge rejected the offer, Kessler withdrew his request for a plea bargain. He instructed the court to proceed with selecting a jury, stating that he was no longer interested in the trade since the sandwich was off the table.
Kessler is charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a dead body. Prosecutors allege he killed Crone-Overholt, 47, while she was staying at his home in Lutz. According to an affidavit, Kessler's daughter saw the two arguing shortly before Crone-Overholt disappeared. The victim had reportedly asked Kessler for 200 dollars so she could leave. In November 2021, fishermen found Crone-Overholt's dismembered remains in McKay Bay. Witnesses said they saw a man matching Kessler's description throw trash bags into the water.
The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office began presenting its case on Tuesday. The office said it would focus on seeking justice for the victim and her family, despite the national attention on Kessler's courtroom remarks. The trial is now underway as the jury completes its selection process.
