Manchester United is currently navigating a nine-game winless streak following a 2-0 loss to Chelsea, a result that has intensified scrutiny on the club's recent transfer spending.

The season began with heavy investment. United spent over £150 million in the summer window to sign Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba for the midfield. The attack also saw additions in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško. Despite these outlays, the squad lacks a consistent goal scorer, and the futures of Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee, and Amad Diallo remain uncertain.

The current defensive structure is under pressure. Lisandro Martínez has publicly criticized the hierarchy for failing to strengthen the back line during the summer. With André Onana on loan at Trabzonspor and veterans Karl Darlow and Tom Heaton set to depart, the goalkeeper position requires reinforcement. Senne Lammens currently holds the primary spot, but alternatives are being evaluated.

Defensive targets include Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton, for whom United previously submitted a £45 million offer in 2024. Other names on the list are Calvin Bassey from Fulham and Castello Lukeba from RB Leipzig, who is valued at approximately €65 million. Left back options include Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace and Adrien Truffert of AFC Bournemouth.

Midfield monitoring continues despite the summer acquisitions. United are tracking Nico Paz of Como and Lennart Karl of Bayern Munich as potential future upgrades. Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona is also a long-term target, though his recent injury issues may facilitate a move in January. The club is also watching the situations of Pablo Barrios at Atletico Madrid and Alex Scott at Bournemouth.

Forwards are a priority area. Ivan Toney of Al Ahli is a candidate for a move, with the striker open to a transfer. Igor Matanovic of Freiburg, rated at €60 million, has reportedly expressed interest in joining Old Trafford. Competition exists for other targets; Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace is being pursued by Nottingham Forest and Everton, while Nicolo Tresoldi of Club Brugge faces interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

The search for a new manager is also underway to replace Michael Carrick. Candidates include unattached managers Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, and Kieran McKenna. Fabian Hürzeler of Brighton and Julian Nagelsmann are also being considered. Thomas Tuchel of England remains a possibility only if he leaves his national role.

Next steps involve monitoring January window opportunities. A loan deal for Alejandro Balde from Barcelona is reportedly on the cards. United will also assess whether to bid for Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray, though the Turkish club is expected to reject initial offers. Contract extensions for other players in the league are progressing, with Adrien Rabiot of AC Milan nearing a deal through 2030 and Federico Bernardeschi of Bologna extending his contract until 2028.
