Fairfield Halloween store shooting leaves one dead and six hurt

A manhunt is underway in Fairfield, California, after a shooter killed one person and injured six others at a Spirit Halloween store on Friday night. The attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time at the Solano Town Center mall.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall stated that at least three victims are in critical condition. All injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital. Marshall described the event as heartbreaking and said detectives were working to identify the responsible party or parties.

David Bernal spoke with KCRA regarding his wife, who was inside the store when the gunfire started. He reported that she heard five loud bangs before running to an emergency exit on the opposite side of the mall. She has since returned home and remains in shock.

The California incident happened hours after a separate shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights, Michigan. A 21-year-old Detroit resident died from serious injuries sustained in that attack. Police said the Michigan shooter, also 21, was hospitalized after bystanders assaulted him during his arrest.

Authorities in both locations indicated they are seeking criminal charges. Police stated that the two incidents do not appear to be connected based on current evidence.
