Troy Aikman believes his recent public remarks placed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a difficult position. The former quarterback acknowledged that Jones had to field questions about a potential reunion without a clear answer.
Aikman told The Musers on Dallas The Ticket radio that he felt the situation was unfair to Jones. He noted that Jones was forced to answer whether he would bring Aikman back or create a role for him, a query with no ideal response.
The two spoke briefly before the Monday Night Football game between the Eagles and Cowboys in Philadelphia. Aikman called the game alongside Joe Buck for ESPN. He said he brought up the topic because he felt he had backed Jones into a corner that was not his fault.
Aikman stated that Jones understood the context and was complimentary about the possibility of a future role. However, Jones clarified that they are not having those conversations at this time.
Speculation about Aikman's career has intensified in recent weeks. Reports indicate a disagreement between Aikman and Buck, who have formed the longest-running booth in NFL history for 25 years. ESPN extended a large contract to Buck but showed little interest in extending Aikman.
Jones indicated on 105.3 The Fan this week that he is open to the idea. He stated that the answer is not necessarily that they will do anything more direct with the team at this time, but it is very possible.
Aikman expressed interest in a front office role with the Cowboys. Jones, who selected Aikman with his first-ever pick as owner, said he would not rule out a reunion.
