SpaceX Shares Surge as AI Division Becomes Top Revenue Driver in Record Q3

A massive earnings beat and aggressive AI infrastructure spending led analysts to sharply raise price targets for SpaceX following its third-quarter results.

SpaceX shares jumped approximately 8 percent in premarket trading on October 21, 2026, following the release of third-quarter financial results that significantly exceeded market expectations. The stock, which had closed at $147.79 on the previous trading day, moved sharply higher in after-hours and early morning sessions as investors digested the company's robust performance and forward-looking guidance.

The primary catalyst for the rally was the company's transition into a major revenue generator in the artificial intelligence sector. SpaceX’s Super Intelligence division, which focuses on AI compute, generated roughly $7.6 billion in revenue for the quarter. This figure marked a year-over-year growth rate of nearly 830 percent and established the AI segment as the company's largest source of income, surpassing its traditional launch and connectivity operations.

Overall, SpaceX reported total revenue of $14.6 billion for the third quarter of 2026. This result represented a 161 percent increase compared to the same period in the prior year and comfortably outperformed consensus estimates, which hovered around $12.7 billion. The company also swung from a net loss in the previous year to a net profit of $4.4 billion, while its adjusted EBITDA reached $8.8 billion, signaling improved operational efficiency and profitability.

The Connectivity segment also contributed significantly to the bottom line, delivering $5.2 billion in revenue. Strong subscriber growth lifted the Starlink consumer base to 13.6 million users. Management highlighted additional momentum from enterprise contracts, pricing adjustments, and the rapid adoption of the Grok Bot, all of which supported the segment's expansion during the quarter.

A critical factor in the market reaction was the guidance provided during the earnings call. CEO Elon Musk and CFO Bret Johnsen outlined revenue projections for the first quarter of 2027 ranging from $33 billion to $37 billion. This forecast was substantially higher than the approximately $22 billion that analysts had previously modeled, indicating a steep acceleration in growth expectations over the next several months.

Management detailed plans for aggressive capital expenditure in the fourth quarter, with spending estimated between $35 billion and $40 billion. These funds are primarily earmarked for AI compute infrastructure at sites including Memphis and Southaven. The company targets 2.5 to 3 gigawatts of nameplate compute capacity by the end of the current year, with pathways discussed to reach 13 gigawatts or more by the end of 2027. Musk noted that demand from hyperscalers remains intense, with compute pricing allowing for payback periods of less than a year and potentially as short as six months.

In response to the financial performance and strategic outlook, Wall Street analysts rapidly revised their price targets upward. JPMorgan more than doubled its target to $500 from $240, maintaining an Overweight rating. Other significant increases included Cantor Fitzgerald raising its target to $345 from $246, Barclays lifting its target to $300 from $254, and Morgan Stanley holding an Overweight rating with a $300 target.

Additional firms adjusted their valuations higher, including Wells Fargo, which raised its target to $274 from $214, and Clear Street, which increased its target to $248 from $217. Citi increased its target to $240 from $200, while UBS and TD Cowen raised their targets to $230 and $224, respectively, from $210 and $200, all maintaining Buy or Overweight stances.

Analysts broadly cited the strong quarterly print, the accelerating expansion of AI compute capabilities, progress in Starlink services, and recent Starship milestones as key drivers for the higher long-term growth outlook. The earnings call also highlighted Starship’s recent orbital success and the deployment of V3 satellites, alongside spectrum expansion plans and the formation of special committees to explore a possible combination with Tesla.

While the elevated spending remains a point of focus for some investors, the average analyst price target has moved higher, reflecting greater conviction in SpaceX’s trajectory. The consensus view suggests that the company’s diversified growth across launch, connectivity, and its new AI leadership positions it for sustained earnings power in the coming years.
