Up to 500 rupees. That is the new cost for a Great Fairy upgrade in the newly released remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, bringing a 28-year-old title to modern hardware. While the original release in 1998 offered these enhancements for free, the remake has introduced a currency cost for services that players previously considered complimentary.

Nintendo has positioned the new version as a definitive entry in its gaming canon. The game follows Link, who navigates a world despoiled by the lust for power. The narrative structure relies heavily on nostalgia, forcing the protagonist to replay the story as an adult after experiencing it as a child. This seven-year gap between Link's childhood and adulthood mirrors the 28-year gap between the original and the remake.

The development team has updated the mechanics to align with contemporary standards. The remake replaces the original's fixed camera angles with an over-the-shoulder view. While this change improves the feel of movement, it removes the top-down perspective used during stealth sequences in Hyrule Castle. New jump and sprint buttons allow for more natural navigation. Combat mechanics have also been smoothed out, though switching between targeted enemies remains less fluid than in modern titles like Elden Ring.

Item management has been overhauled to reduce friction. Players can now swap items through a quick menu, a system first introduced in 2023's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and continued in 2024's The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. This feature allows for on-the-fly strategy changes without pausing the game. For example, players can easily combine Naryu's Love with Bombchus, a combination that was difficult to execute in the original version.

The game includes a new quest log called Threads of Time to assist players who become stuck. Despite this aid, certain puzzles remain complex. The Biggoron Sword quest continues to be convoluted, often requiring external guides. The Water Temple, a level notorious for its difficulty in the 1998 original, is now more tolerable. However, the economic balance has shifted. Player wallets can carry double the capacity of the original, but inflation has hit Hyrule with the new costs for upgrades.

Visual updates present a mixed result. The new textures are highly ornate and generally represent a clear upgrade over the chunky graphics of the past. However, these detailed textures occasionally clash with the game's cartoony proportions. The character Nabooru, for instance, features a redesign with large red lips and golden eye shadow that some reviewers found jarring. The animations have become more extensive, leading to longer cutscenes in the opening hours that can slow the pacing.

Nintendo has also adjusted the personalities of certain NPCs to remove rough edges. Mido, the Kokiri who blocks progress in the forest, has been rewritten from a bully into a well-intentioned but overbearing boss. Kaepora Gaebora, the guiding owl, no longer repeats himself at the slightest provocation. Navi, the fairy companion, has been toned down and no longer chimes in with the phrase Hey! Listen! as frequently as before.

These changes aim to preserve the game's soul while updating its presentation. The remake is described as one of the most faithful adaptations in recent memory, sitting between the Demon's Souls remake and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy in terms of fidelity. It does not rely on adding new content or altering the core story. Instead, it focuses on technical refinement and minor narrative adjustments.

The release of this remake comes ahead of a Zelda movie scheduled for next year. Nintendo has invested significant production values into this project to ensure the title remains relevant for decades. The game serves as a safe bet for the company, leveraging a franchise that defined the childhoods of a generation. It offers a streamlined experience that caters to long-time fans while introducing the classic to new players on the Switch 2 platform.
