Microsoft reported a sharp rise in quarterly profits just days after announcing a major workforce reduction.

The company, which develops Windows, posted profits exceeding $36.6 billion for the three months ending in September. This figure equates to approximately £27.5 billion. The results came on the same day the firm revealed plans to offer buyouts to around 60,000 workers. The goal is to cut costs while directing billions of dollars toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. This move mirrors strategies adopted by other major technology firms that are investing heavily in AI systems despite ongoing questions about the return on such large expenditures.

Microsoft has long focused on building the infrastructure that powers AI. On Monday, the company confirmed its intent to streamline its workforce to manage these costs. It positioned the buyouts as a way to adapt its staffing to changing business needs. The company stated that the voluntary redundancy offer would extend to eligible employees in teams across Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Those who accept the offer will receive financial support and career planning resources. The firm currently employs more than 220,000 people globally.

Financial details from Wednesday showed that quarterly revenue reached $92.3 billion. This represents a 19% increase from the same period a year earlier. Growth in the cloud computing business drove this surge. Revenue for Microsoft Cloud, which includes enterprise technology services, rose by 30%. The company noted that strong adoption of AI development has led to real-world impact across various industries, according to Chief Executive Satya Nadella. However, the firm also flagged risks, including substantial investments in AI that could impact future finances.

Investors responded positively to the earnings report. Microsoft shares climbed by nearly 2.9% in after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday. The market closely monitors these results to gauge whether heavy spending on AI is sustainable. Big tech companies, including Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet, are projected to spend more than $700 billion this year on AI chips and data centers.

The performance of Microsoft stands in contrast to that of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Alphabet disappointed investors on Wednesday by reporting a 25% drop in quarterly net profit compared to the previous year. The company said it will continue to spend heavily on AI. As a result, Alphabet shares fell by 9.75% following the release of its financial results.
