Democratic candidates secured a majority of governorships nationwide for the first time in 16 years during the elections held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. This significant shift highlights the party’s growing strength across various regions, as they capitalized on a political environment that proved challenging for their Republican counterparts.

The Democratic Party successfully flipped control of four governor’s offices in states that President Donald Trump had carried in the 2024 presidential election. These victories in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, and Ohio mark a substantial strategic gain for the party, which also maintained its hold on power in several other key battleground states.

The most surprising outcome occurred in Texas, where Democratic state representative Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott. This result is particularly notable given that Trump won the state by nearly 14 points two years prior and a Democratic governor had not been elected there in over three decades. Hinojosa’s victory makes her the state’s first Latina chief executive, a milestone achieved despite a significant spending disadvantage.

Historic progress was also made in Georgia, where former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican candidate Rick Jackson. Her win flips the governorship for the first time in 24 years and establishes her as the first Black female governor in United States history. Bottoms joined Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Florida Governor Byron Donalds as Black candidates who won gubernatorial races, ensuring that more than one Black governor serves simultaneously for the first time.

In Iowa, State Auditor Rob Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn to become the first Democrat elected to lead the state in two decades. This victory came in a state where Trump had won by 13 points in 2024. Meanwhile, in Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, succeeding Republican Governor Mike DeWine.

Prior to the election, Republicans held a 26 to 24 majority in governor’s races. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, described the outcome as a new era of Democratic state leadership. He stated that the party achieved this turnaround by focusing on daily issues impacting Americans and standing up for their values. The association noted that Democratic governors will represent the majority of states for the first time since 2010.

Democrats also successfully defended their positions in critical swing states. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley defeated Republican Representative Tom Tiffany to succeed two-term Democratic Governor Tony Evers. In Arizona, Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs won re-election against Republican Andy Biggs, positioning herself as a moderate candidate in a state Trump won by 5 percentage points in 2024.

Other key victories included Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who won re-election by more than 20 points, and Michigan Democrat Jocelyn Benson, who defeated Republican John James to succeed Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer. These wins solidify Democratic control in several pivotal electoral states.

As of early Wednesday, November 4, 2026, several races remained too close to call. In Kansas, state Senator Cindy Holscher is locked in a tight contest with Republican Ty Masterson. Although Kansas is historically a solidly Republican state, it has had a Democratic governor for the past eight years. In Nevada, state Attorney General Aaron Ford is facing off against Republican Governor Joe Lombardo in another closely watched battleground race.

A total of 36 gubernatorial contests were on the ballot this year. The combination of new victories and successful defenses has reshaped the landscape of state-level leadership, granting Democrats a commanding presence in the governor’s mansions across the country.
