Alex Garland's 'Civil War' Gets Second Look After Texas Turns Blue: 'You Owe Him an Apology'

Alex Garland's 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War is surging back into the online conversation after Democrats won the Texas governor's mansion and a U.S. Senate seat for the first time in decades.

Set in the near future, the film imagined California and Texas joining forces as the so-called Western Forces, standing together against a tyrannical president while a second civil war split the country apart.

That pairing of a reliably blue state with a deeply red one was never fully explained on screen. At the time of release, it drew head scratching, confusion and even open criticism from viewers who found the premise implausible.

Now, following the victories of senator-elect James Talarico and governor-elect Gina Hinojosa on election night, many are revisiting Garland's vision with fresh eyes.

One user on X shared the film's divided map of the United States and wrote, 'You all owe Alex Garland an apology.'

An editor for The Bulwark offered a similar reassessment, writing, 'Me: CIVIL WAR was intentionally vague to the point of ideological incoherence to avoid mapping on to current culture war nonsense. Alex Garland: I literally foresaw California and Texas rising against the populist fraud in the White House.'

When the film came out, Garland addressed the ambiguity at South by Southwest, arguing the setup contained its own answers for viewers willing to look. 'I personally think questions are answered,' he said. 'There is a fascist president who smashed the Constitution and attacked [American] citizens. And that is a very clear, answered statement. If you want to think about why Texas and California might be allied, and put aside their political differences, the answer would be implicit in that.'

He added that the film 'makes assumptions about the audience,' saying, 'I think answers are there but you have to step to it and not expect to be spoon fed these things.'

Garland also reflected on the country's fractures, noting, 'The warnings [about the country falling apart] all out there, but for some reason they don't get any traction.' He recalled asking himself, 'Is it the polarization? Is it just that we are not able to absorb any information because of the position we've already taken?' That question, he said, was why he made 'a movie that pulls the polarization out of it.'

Civil War starred Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Sonoya Mizuno, following a group of journalists documenting the final days of a second American civil war.
