The flag dropped by official Clete Blakeman on Kansas City right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped out a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Rashee Rice, a move that would have given the Chiefs a 31-24 lead. The penalty occurred on fourth down and goal from the one-yard line with the clock at zero. Instead of ending the game, the Chiefs were pushed back to the six-yard line, setting up a final defensive stand for the home team.

The false start allowed Broncos defensive linemen Jonathon Cooper and Nick Bonitto to collapse the pocket. Linebacker Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes, preserving Denver's 28-24 victory. The result gives the Broncos a 6-2 record and a half-game lead over the Chiefs, who now sit at 5-2 in the AFC West. The teams split the season series, with Denver winning this contest in a close finish.

Head coach Sean Payton credited the home crowd with the win, stating that the noise level contributed to the infraction. He noted that the volume was high enough to influence Moore's actions on the final play. Payton also marked the game as his 200th career victory in the NFL.

Andy Reid, the Chiefs' head coach, disputed the call, describing it as one man's opinion. He stated that he saw Moore move his head but did not observe the false start. Cooper began pointing at the officials immediately after the ball was snapped and the play was blown dead. Mahomes accepted the decision, saying the team had to go with whatever was called, though he noted that minor infractions are often overlooked in high-pressure moments.

The Chiefs' frustration with the officiating crew stemmed from an earlier sequence in the fourth quarter. With 13:36 remaining and Denver leading 24-13, the Chiefs faced a third down and six from their own 36-yard line. Mahomes threw a quick pass to rookie running back Emmett Johnson, who was stopped short of the first down by Cooper and Alex Singleton. A flag for an illegal man downfield on Moore was thrown.

After a review, officials spotted the ball two yards shy of the first-down marker. Payton declined the penalty, opting to punt on fourth down. As both teams lined up, the officials re-spotted the ball less than a foot from the first-down marker. Reid did not call a timeout to reconsider the situation. Kicker Matt Araiza punted the ball through the end zone, giving Denver possession at its own 20-yard line.

Reid acknowledged that the decision to punt would have been different if the ball had been closer to the first-down marker initially. Mahomes said the team did not realize the new spot until they sent the punt team onto the field. Reid later spoke with officials during a commercial break about the late change in the ball's position.

The Broncos capitalized on the possession, driving down the field. Quarterback Russell Wilson, referred to in the source as Nix, led a drive that closed the gap. He threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins on fourth down and goal, followed by a successful two-point conversion to Jaylen Waddle. The Chiefs reached the Denver 30-yard line but suffered a six-yard sack on third down. Kicker Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal attempt in the rain, marking his fifth miss from 50-plus yards this season.

Denver took the lead with two minutes remaining. Rookie Jonah Coleman caught a 51-yard pass and ran it to the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. Mahomes led the Chiefs to the one-yard line with 15 seconds left. The final drive ended with the false start call. Moore said the loss was painful because of the close situation and the specific nature of the penalty.
