Russell Brand and his wife, Laura Gallacher, have taken the stand in London to offer conflicting portraits of the actor's personal life as his criminal trial continues. The proceedings began on October 12, and this week's testimony provides the first detailed look at the defense's strategy for the jury.
Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted sexual assault. Six women have brought the claims, alleging that Brand attacked them during a decade-long period from 1999 to 2009. The London prosecution described the 51-year-old former comedian as a "ruthless sexual predator" in its opening arguments.
Gallacher, who married Brand in 2017, testified on Thursday, October 29. She described him as an "incredible husband" and a "wonderful father" to the couple's three children. According to Sky News, she told the court that their marriage is built on honesty, describing the relationship as "very honest, frank, and clear."
Brand took the stand the day before, on Wednesday, October 28. He denied all charges but offered a detailed account of his behavior toward women. He stated that he became comfortable using his fame to facilitate sexual access, which he acknowledged was a mistake.
"As I became more successful and famous, I felt very comfortable allowing that to facilitate sexual access, which, I agree with you, was a mistake," Brand told the jury. He added that he has been "persuasive, seductive, pleading, and coquettish" with women, admitting that some actions now appear to go beyond mere thoughtlessness or infidelity.
The actor maintained his innocence throughout his testimony. While he disputed the criminal nature of the acts, he conceded that some of his past conduct was "wrong in retrospect." The jury is now weighing his account against the prosecution's characterization of his conduct.
