Anthropic’s Backers Ride the Wave to a Potential $2 Trillion Windfall
Leading venture capital firms and prominent individuals have seen their stakes in the AI giant swell to billions of dollars ahead of its anticipated public debut.

Anthropic is poised to make a historic entry into the public markets this year, with expectations of a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion. This anticipated listing stands to create a massive financial windfall for the AI company’s backers, ranging from early-stage believers to later-stage institutional investors. Even before the stock begins trading on public exchanges, the stakes held by many of these venture capitalists and early supporters already command billions of dollars in value.
The current private market valuation of the company stands at $965 billion. At this price point, the holdings of key investors have already appreciated significantly. According to data from Bloomberg, the financial positions of several prominent backers reflect the extraordinary growth trajectory of the leading AI lab. The numbers illustrate just how rapidly the company has scaled since its inception, transforming early checks into multi-billion-dollar assets.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among the most notable individual beneficiaries of this growth. Schmidt invested in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just $461 million, according to PitchBook data. That early conviction has paid off handsomely. Today, Schmidt owns approximately 1% of the company. Even at the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, a testament to the power of early entry in the AI sector.
Institutional investors have also reaped substantial rewards, particularly those who made late-stage bets with massive capital. Iconiq, an investment outfit, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This significant investment has since grown to a value of $17 billion. There is potential for this position to double again once the IPO takes place, further cementing the firm’s financial success.
Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D round, has also accumulated a substantial position. The VC firm has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. Currently, that stake is valued at $14 billion. Menlo’s leadership in the Series D round underscores its central role in the company’s capital structure and growth strategy during its most recent funding phases.
Sequoia, a famed venture capital firm, entered the picture much later in the company’s history. The firm first backed the AI lab only earlier this year, when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured it about 1% ownership. Despite the high entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value, highlighting the continued upward momentum in the AI market.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, represents a different angle on the investment landscape. The firm invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round and has since funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This cumulative investment has resulted in a stake worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the firm’s financial exposure to Anthropic remains significant.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, which valued the company at $5 billion at the time. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, now worth $7 billion. This dramatic increase in value underscores the explosive growth Anthropic has experienced since that specific funding round.
The stakes for these investors are high, but the potential rewards are equally vast. As Anthropic moves closer to its IPO, the financial landscape for its backers continues to shift. Whether the company achieves the anticipated $2 trillion valuation or settles lower, the early and mid-stage investors have already secured substantial gains. The public listing will mark a new chapter for the AI giant and provide a clear benchmark for the value of its equity in the open market.
This trend reflects the broader dynamics of the AI industry, where early access to leading technology can result in exponential financial returns. For Anthropic’s backers, the journey from a $461 million valuation in 2021 to a potential $2 trillion public listing is a remarkable financial arc. As the IPO date approaches, all eyes will be on how the market prices this leading AI lab, potentially setting a new standard for technology valuations in the coming years.
